Ex-death row inmate and interships - Nick Yarris

The Criminology Society has arranged for an ex-death row inmate, Nick Yarris to give a talk at the Strand building on Monday 5th March, 6pm in Room 1B06 on the strand campus.

Nick Yarris was on death row in Pennsylvania for 22 years and was released in 2004. He now lives in England with his family and works with Reprieve giving lectures about his experience.  His lecture will cover his offence, his experience on death row including the way in which he was treated and his release.  I have been informed that his lectures are fascinating and thought-provoking and of great interest to those currently studying criminal justice and human rights issues.

INTERNSHIPS: There is also an internship programme taking place in Austin, Texas at the Texas Defender Service during August and September this year for about 4-6 weeks. It will involve undertaking work on death row cases. It is unpaid and fully funded by the students, who will need to sort out their flights, accommodation etc. There are 4 places and it is open to KCL and Cambridge University students. There will be a number of previous interns at Nick’s lecture, who will give a brief overview of their experience, what they gained from it, costs, details of accommodation etc. It will also give you a chance to ask any further questions about the internship. Full details on the internship and application procedure will be handed out during the lecture. For any immediate questions, please email Ruth Armstrong at ra299@cam.ac.uk

Hope to see you there. In the meantime, have a look on Nick Yarris’s website at www.nickyarris.com to find out more.
